Happy New Year from Nantucket: Former vice president Joe Biden rings in 2019 at traditional Christmas tree light

NANTUCKET, Mass. — Vice President Joe Biden of Delaware rang in 2019 in his hometown of Nantucket, Massachusetts, spending the holiday weekend shopping and overseeing a traditional Christmas tree lighting for senior citizens.

The former Delaware senator and Obama administration official, who continues to visit Nantucket often, met up with friends for dinner Saturday night at Salty’s, an upscale seafood restaurant on the island’s waterfront. Biden’s friend and former Senate colleague, Edward Brooke, accompanied him.

Biden then posed for photos with Nantucket’s mayor, David Caprio, at a Christmas tree light in his hometown.

The holiday ended with a heavy celebrity turnout at Market 1883, a Nantucket restaurant that also hosted numerous celebrity diners while filming the HBO series “Boardwalk Empire.”

Actress Patricia Arquette and “Dancing With the Stars” champion Kym Johnson were among those who enjoyed the holiday weekend in Nantucket. Biden’s wife, Jill, and their daughter Ashley Biden also attended.

Biden attended the mayor’s inauguration on Christmas Day, officially taking office. The vice president delivered an impassioned speech on how the election of President Donald Trump had made him feel “clueless.”

There was no word Monday from Biden’s office on what he planned to do in Washington after the holidays.

Washington’s Capuano photo mall hosts the annual tree lighting, but it was unclear whether Biden attended that event or even attended it.
